Apple has officially announced the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, the high-end half of the iPhone 13 lineup. They feature a faster A15 Bionic chip, three all-new cameras, and an enhanced display with a 120Hz ProMotion high refresh rate capable of reaching 1,000 nits of brightness. The iPhone 13 Pro is available for $999, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is available for $1,099. Both will be available for pre-order on Friday, with delivery scheduled for September 24th.
Both models feature Super Retina XDR displays with variable refresh rates between 10Hz and 120Hz. The displays are the same size as last year at 6.1 and 6.7 inches. They have slightly smaller notches, which should give the iOS status bar more space. The phones will be available in a variety of colors, including graphite, gold, silver, and a new light blue.
Apple claims that the phones feature an entirely new three-camera system. The wide camera’s larger sensor should result in improved low-light photography, while the ultrawide camera’s wider aperture should result in similar improvements. The telephoto camera on the phones now has a 3x zoom, enabling a total of 6x optical zoom across the three cameras. All three cameras now feature a night mode, and a new macro mode allows for close-up photography of subjects as close as 2cm. Both models feature sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
On the software front, Apple announced a new Photographic Styles feature that appears to work similarly to traditional camera filters but with a dose of computational photography. On the video front, the cinematic focus feature previously announced for the iPhone 13 will be available on the 13 Pro and Pro Max as well. Additionally, the iPhone 13 Pro will be capable of recording in up to 4K / 30fps in ProRes, a higher-quality video format that gives video editors more control over post-production editing. The base 128GB storage option, on the other hand, is limited to 1080p / 30fps. Apple says it will add ProRes support “in a future iOS 15 updates.”
Both devices are powered by Apple’s new A15 Bionic chip, which features the same CPU and GPU performance boosts as last year. Additionally, Apple claims that the chip should be faster at machine learning tasks. Additionally, battery life has been increased, with the 13 Pro lasting 1.5 hours longer than the 12 Pro and the 13 Pro Max lasting 2.5 hours longer than the 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro comes with storage options ranging from 128GB to 1TB, the most storage Apple has ever offered on a phone. Apple has also improved 5G performance by adding support for additional bands, which should result in improved coverage.
This is the third consecutive year that Apple has divided its flagship phone lineup into regular and “Pro” models. However, many reviewers noted last year that the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 were nearly identical. While the 12 Pro included an additional telephoto camera, lidar sensor, and increased RAM and base storage, its basic design, processor, 5G capabilities, and OLED display were all identical to the standard iPhone 12.
