Google’s Live Caption feature to support more languages

More languages will be supported by Google’s Live Caption feature in the near future. On Android and Chrome, the accessibility feature currently only supports transcribing English.

Google’s feature could soon include support for transcribing French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, according to Android Police, which published a report claiming Live Caption is coming to Chrome OS. The news comes only days after Chrome’s new Live Caption feature added support for transcribing video expression.

In Chrome OS, a configuration page explains what the accessibility feature should do.

“In the Chrome browser, automatically generates captions for media. “Audio and captions are stored locally and never leave the device,” according to a Live Caption explainer, which also provides a language list. For apps and sites that support Live Captions, you can also adjust the size and style from this screen.

Your Chromebook will download the language’s speech files in seconds after you choose a language, according to Android Police. “Despite the fact that it appears to have downloaded the files, Chrome OS does not yet properly add captions to international YouTube images. I’ve even attempted to play media using Linux (Beta) and Android software, but to no avail.”

Google’s Live Caption feature debuted in 2019 as part of the company’s effort to make Android more user-friendly. It was first made available on Pixel phones running Android 10, then extended to other Android devices before being included in Chrome 89. If you’d like to try out the feature in Chrome, go to Settings > Advanced > Accessibility.

With a Chromebook launch on the horizon, it’s encouraging to learn that Live Caption will soon be upgraded to include multilingual help. All the better if it means more people around the world can interact with one another. As soon as more languages are supported in a stable version, we’ll let you know.
