Apple, which started assembling the iPhone 11 series in India, is all set to produce the iPhone 12 series in India for local customers, the tech giant said Tuesday. Despite its launch in October last year, the iPhone 12 significantly contributed to Apple’s rise in the country’s festive quarter (October-December) according to market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR). Apple registered over 60 percent (on-year) growth in its Indian business in the full year 2020 while it had an impressive 100 percent (YoY) growth for the festive quarter and iPhone 12 contributed significantly to it.
“Apple is positioned for aggressive growth in the coming quarters with its recent market gains in India. The local iPhone 12 assembly in India will give a further boost to Apple’s prospects,” said Prabhu Ram, Head of Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, to IANS.
On the domestic sales front, Apple was racing on the stellar performance of iPhone 11, XR and then iPhone 12. For the first time in the festive quarter of 2020, Apple saw its smartphone market share in India double to almost 4 per cent.
The company started to assemble the iPhone SE 2020 locally in India at the Wistron facility in Bengaluru back in August of last year. The company also started selling the iPhone 11, which was assembled in India last year, and the iPhone 12 local assembly is expected to begin soon.
According to Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices & IPDS, IDC India, Apple’s iPhone shipments in 2020 were very good, having almost doubled over 2019.
“Now with plans to manufacture iPhone 12 in India, this will certainly help Apple to continue last year’s momentum in 2021,” Singh said to IANS.
For the first time, iPhone 12 models use 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, including the new camera, Taptic Engine, MagSafe, and Apple’s MagSafe accessories. Also, Apple’s suppliers in India are now using solar and wind energy to meet their needs.
The iPhone 12 comes with 5G technology, features the fastest A14 Bionic chip, edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays, advanced computational photography and a sophisticated flat-screen design with Ceramic Shield front cover, offering four times better drop performance.
The Indian Government is keen to encourage Apple and other global giant manufacturers to use India not only as a manufacturing hub but also as an exporter. The Government of India has been reaching out to companies that are looking to expand on the continent or are trying to move from China.
