What is Qualcomm’s aptX lossless audio? How does it differ from aptX adaptive?

As the market for truly wireless earbuds matures, there is a greater emphasis on the quality of audio transmission over Bluetooth. Qualcomm has announced aptX Lossless, a new feature in Snapdragon Sound that will enable CD-quality 16-bit 44.1kHz lossless music streaming over Bluetooth. Basically, this technology can push a higher bit rate of audio which eventually increases your audio quality.

aptX Lossless is an expansion of aptX Adaptive technology that detects and scales up the quality of the audio stream dynamically when the user plays a lossless file or when the RF conditions are favorable. When it comes to music, this audio codec can deliver audio quality at rates of up to 1Mbit/s or scale down to 140kbits/s in congested RF situations.

Qualcomm aptX Lossless Features:

qualcomm aptx lossless
  • Supports 44.1kHz, 16-bit CD lossless audio qualityDesigned to scale-up to CD lossless audio based on Bluetooth link quality
  • User can select between CD lossless audio 44.1kHz and 24-bit 96kHz lossy
  • Auto-detects to enable CD lossless audio when the source is lossless audio
  • Mathematically bit-for-bit exact
  • Bit-rate – ~1Mbps
“At Qualcomm Technologies we’re excited about the future of sound, and we’re continually looking for ways to help our customers deliver new and exciting listening experiences. Lossless audio means mathematically bit-for-bit exact, with no loss of the audio file and up to now the necessary bit rate to deliver this over Bluetooth has not been available. With many leading music streaming services now offering extensive lossless music libraries, and consumer demand for lossless audio growing, we’re pleased to announce this new support for CD lossless audio streaming for Bluetooth earbuds and headsets which we plan to make available to customers later this year,” said James Chapman, vice president and general manager, Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd.

According to the firm, aptX Lossless will be available to the market in late 2021. The business also noticed an increase in the momentum of Snapdragon Sound adoption by companies such as Xiaomi, Edifier, Master & Dynamic, and ASUS’s Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders.
